When you know you are moving to another state, it’s time to begin packing. Make a plan that outlines what to pack and when. You can go room by room, starting with non-essentials first and saving the necessities for last. Label each box with the contents and the room where they belong.

About a month ahead of your move, call the utility companies in the new area to get the new accounts set up. You may have to pay deposits. Also, notify your current utilities of your move out date. It’s good to allow a buffer around these dates so you don’t find yourself without utilities should something delay your move.

Call your credit card companies, banks, and other relevant contacts to inform them of your new address so that you get important mail at your new address right away.

Every state has its guidelines on how you become legal residents. Do an online search for “how to establish residency in [new state].” It could involve getting a driver’s license, signing a lease, buying a house, or registering to vote.
Get a New Driver’s License
Most states require new residents to get a new driver’s license within a specified period. Make an appointment with the DMV soon after you move to get this taken care of promptly. You will also need to get new tags for your vehicles.
